I had the great opportunity to view Murderball at the time I was transitioning to a wheelchair. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I didn’t know what to expect but this documentary about the players on the US National wheelchair rugby team was not only cathartic but extremely fun to watch.
The thing about this film is that it’s not just about rugby. It’s about life for these players who have some form of quadriplegia. Several of the questions I had about using a wheelchair were answered, and some I didn’t even know I had were brought up in a practical and matter-of-fact way.
Listening to the interviews with the players made me feel better about things and let me know that everything would be alright. Seeing this film then consolidating it with my experience playing wheelchair tennis really made a huge difference in how I approach the world now from a wheelchair.
